Learning to write for kids - what to start with
It turns out that a lot of children who start school are not quite able to write. Of course, there is nothing to worry about - after all, part of primary school education is nothing else than learning to read and write. However, it is worth observing the child clearly at the stage of e.g. playing. It may turn out that the toddler is not fully mobile - then it may also affect the slow learning to write.
Let us also pay attention to the so-called self-service activities - how does the child use the toilet, is he / she coping well with eating, dressing, etc. It may be worth consulting with a sensory integration therapist if these activities are slow and clumsy. We start learning to write on the playground - we improve the parts of the body that are involved in writing. Of course, it's mainly about the hands, but not only. The child should play as much as possible in movement - jump, roll, cross obstacles, play in the sand, etc.
Before the intensive learning to write begins, it is worth training your hand and fingers - accessories such as plasticine or sand will be useful. You can also encourage your child to cook together - for example, making dumplings will work. It is also necessary to take care of eye-hand coordination exercises (cooperation between the eyes and hands and mastering the left and right sides). Here, activities such as throwing a ball to the target, building with blocks, playing memory, puzzles, etc. will work.
Correct pen position and grip
The correct position at which the child starts learning to write is extremely important. Contrary to appearances, it is not so easy to achieve - it is often disturbed due to incorrect setting or, for example, selection of furniture. The desk should be well lit - ideally it should be placed by the window. If this is not possible, a good quality lamp is enough. If the child is left-handed, the light should come from the right and vice versa. The toddler must sit upright - the right angle should be formed in four places - between the elbow and the shoulder, between the abdomen and thighs, in the knees - between the calves and thighs, between the feet resting on the floor (or a support). Make sure that the lumbar spine rests against the chair. You should also pay attention to the correct grip of the pen. You can force the right grip with a special cover, which you will get, for example, in stationery stores.
It is worth showing the child the instruction by telling a fairy tale - two fingers circle the pen / pens and give each other a kiss (index finger and thumb). The middle finger then peeks at them, and the ring and the little finger do not want to see it and hide. The introductory exercises are mainly drawing a path through the maze, coloring and drawing. Then comes the stage of patterns - from the largest to the finer ones. It is also worth using scientific aids - letters for learning to write will come in handy.
